Brendea Cosmin

There are painters who need to dig inside things, to pull out their secret substance. Cosmin Brendea belongs to this kind of artist. He looks at reality with an almost maniacal stubbornness, tending to every single detail. That visual universe he created, populated by mythological allegories, sacred scenes, cheerful and enigmatic compositions, reveals a constant narrative vocation that never resolves into a mere exercise in style, representing instead the primary key to another perceptive dimension. He thus establishes himself as a painter of a visionary realism that transforms outward form into emotional reflection. Stylistically, in his interiors and urban backdrops, echoes of Van Gogh' s painting resonate: the angled framings, the skewed perspectives, and the oblique lines charge the space with a deep psychological and emotional tension, transforming buildings into true landscapes of the soul. Conversely, when he paints the human body, the stroke elongates, the forms stretch until they become loose-limbed, elegant, and languid, with a grace that looks to sixteenth-century Mannerism and at the same time to the visionary restlessness of artists like Fussli. It is a continuous interplay between physical concreteness and dream, and this is clearly seen in works such as The David' s Beer or Primavera onirica. In The David' s Beer, the figure of the bare-chested young man, wearing dark glasses and holding a beer, dominates the foreground with the almost Olympian composure of a classical statue catapulted into our everyday life. But it is behind him that the painting opens up its true visionary nature: the background burns in a dense and theatrical red on which the city architectures seem to crumble, tilting and swerving as if pushed by an inner seismic force. Above them, a dynamic cascade of human figures climbs upward, evoking the sculptural agitation and tension of Auguste Rodin ' s reliefs or the tumultuous masses typical of Last Judgments. A visual and conceptual short circuit is established, becoming the pulsating heart of the work. Brendea juxtaposes, within the same pictorial space, the calm and normality of an everyday gesture " captured in a static and almost banal snapshot " with a diametrically opposite dimension, made of chaos, movement, and saturated colors. This is how the work transforms into something much more profound: a suspended allegory of contemporary man, who lives between the apparent calm of an ordinary day and an inner apocalypse of submerged visions, ready to emerge only upon a more attentive gaze. In Primavera onirica, instead, the frenzy gives way to an almost enchanted calm. The figure at the center, almost certainly a selfportrait of the artist, crouches in the foreground with a serene gaze directed at the viewer, becoming both guide and witness of his own inner universe. All around, a motionless landscape unfolds, where the calm sea, the rocky walls, and the tapered vegetation evoke those suspended atmospheres of metaphysical painting. The pictorial matter becomes more intimate and narrative while the natural element merges with the dimension of dream, transforming the canvas into the account of an instant in which time seems to stand still, leaving space for contemplation. A painting of pure presence, a hand-to-hand struggle with form to trace the bare contingency of an instant and the visceral weave that continues to vibrate beyond the visible.
